WHAT IS CLIENT - CENTREDNESS
All our programmes are designed to help consultants,
change agents, coaches and leaders to work in a way that is
more client - centred.
We believe that for every situation that requires
an expert to fix it there are hundreds of situations that
an individual could solve for themselves, with a little judicious
help from a client centred helper (consultant) who is not
interested in fostering dependency.
Briefly, client-centred
consulting is about:
- Developing an equal and
respectful relationship between consultant and client
- Assuming that clients are able
to solve problems and make decisions for themselves, and
can do so with a little help
- Taking time to build trust with
the client or client group
- Negotiating a contract that ensures
that ownership of the issue remains with the client.
- Being willing to help the client
deal with any feelings or emotions that may be preventing
them from dealing with the issue
- Spending as much time as it takes
to help the client look at the issue from every angle and
agree what the actual problem is
- Helping clients make decisions
and commit themselves to a plan of action
- Leaving behind a self-sustaining
client system, rather than fostering dependence
- Having the courage to confront
clients, regardless of seniority, and help them recognise
when they themselves are part of the problem
- Being honest, genuine and authentic
at all times
- Being able to stay with clients
in situations of extreme ambiguity
Working in this way is not easy. It requires
not only technical and professional skills, but also an extra
competence in the process of consulting and a high level of
confidence, self-awareness and self esteem.
