Extending Your Range Of Consulting Styles
You are likely to work with a wide range of
clients, in different functions, who all have unique problems.
You need to be able to select a style of working
appropriate to each situation.
During the programme you will learn four
distinct intervention styles.
Acceptant:
Which is used when the client’s feelings and emotions
are preventing them from dealing with the problem logically.
The key to an acceptant approach is using empathic listening
and support and helping the client(s) acknowledge and deal
with the feelings that are blocking progress.
Catalytic:
Where you help the client to clarify their understanding of
the problem, do a thorough diagnosis, before moving on to
examine all possible options and then making a decision to
which they are committed.
Confrontational:
Sometimes the client is part of the problem. It may be necessary
to point out that there is an inconsistency between what the
client says they will do and what they are actually doing.
Prescriptive:
When you work prescriptively you will listen to the clients
problem, do a thorough diagnosis, and offer the client a solution
or recommendation.
During the workshop there will be opportunities
to practise all four styles,
experience their use as a client, and observe them being used
by colleagues.
